Democracry is Dead Long Live Social Media

How will social media change democracy? Do we need representational democracy (voting in a mediator) or can we run a direct democracy on Government-as-a-platform. Given that the biggest issues that faced Australia's prime ministerial battle was lack of communication from Government AND Media, should social media be utilised more?
